Meat Loaf is going ahead with his New Zealand tour despite a health scare that nearly derailed last night's Wellington show.

The 64-year-old rocker told the crowd in Wellington last night that he had been to hospital earlier that day and doctors had told him not to perform, The Dominion Post reported.

The Bat out of Hell singer is due to perform sold out shows in Tauranga tonight and Auckland on Saturday, and promoters confirmed to nzherald.co.nz that both shows were going ahead.

They didn't know what Meat Loaf had been taken to hospital for.

The scare follows a widely panned 12-minute opening slot at the AFL final in Melbourne earlier this month, in which Meat Loaf seemed out of breath and out of time with the music.

Meat Loaf performs at October Bay Park Arena in Tauranga tonight, and Auckland's Vector Arena tomorrow night.
