When you've made your name as a tough-guy movie hero, it's no fun when the action starts to dry up.

So, as Steven Seagal's star starts to fade, he's set out to find a little of the real thing.

The 59-year-old has been sworn in as a £10-an-hour deputy sheriff to patrol the US-Mexico border in west Texas - a prime smuggling crossing used by drug traffickers.

His new boss insists the role isn't a stunt.

"It became very clear to me that Mr Seagal is not in this for the celebrity," said Sheriff Arvin West.

"He's like the rest of us down here. He has a sincere passion for his country and wants to do more to help."

The martial arts expert earned his reputation as an action hero in the 1980s and early 90s in films such as Under Siege and Out For Justice.

But in the last decade his profile has dropped and his films have mainly gone straight to DVD.
