A controversial hip-hop group have been canned from the Big Day Out lineout because of their homophobic lyrics.
Music by hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All features homophobic and misogynistic lyrics which discuss sexual violence against women and refer to homosexuals as 'faggots'.
Wellington man Calum Bennachie wrote to Big Day Out promoters expressing his concerns saying: "lyrics such as those played by Odd Future increase the societal discourse against lgbt people, a discourse that encourages bullying and violence".
The Auckland Council intervened after Bennachie contacted the Chair of the Auckland Council's Parks and Heritage Forum Sandra Coney. The Auckland Council owns Big Day Out venue Mt Smart Stadium.
Leader of Odd Future, Tyler the Creator, has previously denied accusations his lyrics are homophobic.
"I'm not homophobic," he told magazine NME. "I just think 'faggot' hits and hurts people. It hits. And 'gay' just means you're stupid. I don't know, we don't think about it, we're just kids. We don't think about that shit. But I don't hate gay people. I don't want anyone to think I'm homophobic."
