TV & Radio Friday November 18

Human Planet finishes its journey in cities, where nature still gets in, and last chance to see late-night comedy Brown Bruthaz.

TV

Human Planet

Coronation Street (TV1, 7.30pm). Not Mary, Queen of Shops as listed. And for that, we are grateful.

Human Planet (Prime, 7.30pm). The final episode turns to the man-made environs of cities. More than half the world’s population live in cities, in which we might think we would be safe from nature. However, it has a way of creeping in, from bed bugs that suck blood at night, to rats in restaurants. In some cities, nature has been incorporated: in Fez, Morocco, leather tanneries rely on wild pigeon droppings; in Dubai, falcons play a vital role. Even in Manhattan, there is a community of beekeepers. Meanwhile, British architect Norman Foster is creating a carbon-neutral, waste-free city in Abu Dhabi, which may be the way of the future.

Mad Love (TV2, 8.00pm). Only three episodes left of this sitcom-with-potential. Well, until it was cancelled after 13 episodes. Because there are only three episodes left, naturally the characters who hate each other are heading towards something else – tonight, Connie (Judy Greer) sees a different side to Larry (Tyler Labine).

The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30pm). Tonight: James McAvoy, comedian John Bishop, Joanna Lumley, and the Arctic Monkeys perform.

The Jonathan Ross Show (TV1, 8.45pm). Tonight, lovely Miranda Hart and Michael Sheen, plus Noel Gallagher.

Brown Bruthaz (TV3, 11.15pm). The final of this fun little satire about a couple of hip-hoppers and their fairly mad friends. They’re supposed to be working on a second album after their first one was a big success, but crazy stuff keeps getting in the way. It’s fairly broadly played, but when they dial it down a notch, funny.

FILM

Rambo III (Four, 8.30pm). For a Buddhist (yeah, really), Rambo certainly does like to be around wars. In this third effort, his commanding officer from ’Nam is kidnapped by the Russians in Afghanistan and Rambo – siding with the Mujahedin – has to rescue him. With meditation and chanting, presumably. Oh no, make that a bow and exploding arrows. Sly Stallone made a surprisingly good fourth film, Rambo, in 2008, about the Burmese civil war and a fifth, Rambo: Last Stand, is rumoured to be in production, although Stallone is being coy. The war on Mexican drug traffickers has been mentioned. Perhaps the public could write in with suggestions: there are plenty of conflicts to go around. Rambo III mindlessly misses its target, however. (1988) 5 – Diana Balham

RADIO

Classic Concert (Radio New Zealand National, 11.06pm). Tonight it’s Lucinda Williams – Live at the Fillmore, recorded in San Francisco. The “Americana” country/blues/rock singer displayed her characteristic blend of passion and world-weariness over three nights back in 2004. – Diana Balham
