Nice new episodes of The Graham Norton Show, and a comedy troll on The Adventures of Merlin.

The Adventures of Merlin
NB: The TV1 listings in the November 5 and 12 issues of the Listener say “To Be Advised” at 4.55pm every weekday, and at 7.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday because, at the time we went to press, TVNZ had not made a decision about the programmes that would screen in those timeslots. However, TVNZ has since announced it will screen Coronation Street at 7.30pm on Thursdays and Fridays starting November 10. Ellen will screen at 5.00pm every weekday. TVNZ’s full TV guide is here.
aimRenderAd(300, 250, '300X250','ContentRect','/POS=POS2'); if(!$.browser.msie){ ContentRect_frame = $("#ContentRect")[0]; ContentRect_frame.src = ContentRect_frame.src; }Human Planet (Prime, Friday, 7.30pm). It’s how we amazing humans have adapted to life on or near rivers: this episode includes a Laotian fisherman walking a high wire strung above the raging Mekong River on his way to work; the extraordinary partnership between Samburu tribespeople and wild elephants in Northern Kenya; and a father who takes his two children on a six-day trek to school down a frozen river in the Himalayas.
The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30pm). TV3’s talking heads go head-to-head with TV1’s talking heads. The Graham Norton Show returns (it was being repeated) and is lined up against The Jonathan Ross Show, so it may depend on whose guests you like the most. On Graham’s sofa are Kate Winslet, Rob Brydon and Jamie Bell (who is starring in Tintin, albeit in animated form) and music from Noah and the Whale. Over on TV1, Ross’s guests are David Walliams, Seth Rogen, Michael Bublé and Coldplay.
The Adventures of Merlin (Prime, 8.35pm). It pays to remember this is designed to appeal to kids – it replaces Doctor Who when the Time Lord is in-between adventures. Hence the comedy, and tonight the CG department goes all-out with a troll whose breath can, among other things, rot fruit.
Supernatural (TV2, 10.30pm). The trouble with making mythical beings real is that you run into roadblocks: if you have angels, demons, hell and purgatory, where is God? Supernatural equivocates about the big guy, and leaves the puny humans to their free will and bad choices. Which is where this Castiel-centric episode comes in, in which it is revealed what the angel has been doing with the demon Crowley.
Castle (TV1, 11.15pm). Back, back, back to the beginning of Castle, when the URST was fresh and new and Castle was more feckless than he is now. When is the new season beginning, TV1? We went to know if Kate Beckett lives after being shot last season. Because they’re really likely to get rid of their lead character.
FILM
Rambo: First Blood Part II (Four, 8.30pm). Stop press. Thug with stupid name finds American prisoners of war in Vietnam. In 1985. Duh? (1985) 5 – Diana Balham
RADIO
Classic Concert (Radio New Zealand National, 11.06pm). Tonight it’s those famously unharmonious folkies Simon and Garfunkel, who sang songs of peace and love but couldn’t co-exist on a stage without wanting to shriek at each other. This concert, Live 1969, is from their final North American tour before the release of the mega-selling Bridge Over Troubled Water album – and splitsville. – Diana Balham
