TV & Radio Friday November 25

It's nearly close of play in the election campaign, and Ben Boyce does for politics what he did for rugby.

TV

WANNA-BEn

Election 2011 (TV1, 7.30pm). We’re nearing close of play in the election campaign, thank goodness, and here’s the final addresses from all the qualifying parties.

The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30pm). Quite the line-up tonight: Johnny Depp, Carey Mulligan, Ricky Gervais, Ed Byrne and Snow Patrol. Take that Jonathon Ross over on TV1 at 8.30pm, you are just a repeat that features Sarah Jessica Parker, Lewis Hamilton and Adele.

WANNA-BEn: Politician (TV3, 10.00pm). Ben Boyce does for politics what he did for rugby. Which is not a lot, really, except provide a diverting half-hour before the big day tomorrow. Passing on sage advice about how to be a politician are Phil Goff, Winston Peters and Hone Harawira. “It looks like a pretty sweet gig,” says Boyce. “You get a free BMW and a RadioLive slot to talk about cats.”

Supernatural (TV2, 10.30pm). It’s finale time, and Supernatural always likes to go out with a bang. Season six ends with a really big reveal about Castiel (Misha Collins), who has been getting ideas above his station. Fun demon Crowley (Mark Sheppard) also puts into action his plan to open Purgatory (“Vast, unutilised and Hell-adjacent”), and Sam (Jared Padalecki) is internalising a really complicated situation in his head.

FILM

Escape from LA (Four, 8.30pm). That Snake Plissken sure gets around … slowly. A mere 15 years after escaping from New York, he’s back escaping from LA, which, following a major earthquake is now an island inhabited by freaks. Kurt Russell, who plays Snake, says this is his favourite character. Steve Buscemi, on the other hand, only took the role of Map to the Stars Eddie to help fund his directorial debut, Trees Lounge, which, happily for him, was a pretty good movie. This one, not so much. (1996) 5 – Diana Balham

RADIO

Classic Concert (Radio New Zealand National, 11.06pm). A sad fact: this is the great Roy Orbison’s last concert, recorded in Ohio, on December 4, 1988, two days before he died of a heart attack, aged 52. Orbison’s career was in orbit again with the runaway success of supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, which consisted of Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. – Diana Balham
