TV & Radio Thursday November 24

Media 7 looks at the election coverage so far, and local comedy Diplomatic Immunity gets another go-around.

TV

Diplomatic Immunity

Journos (TVNZ 7, Sky 077, 10.05pm). This who-watches-the-watchmen documentary series follows five Australian journalists working around the globe. It begins with SBS Dateline reporter Sophie McNeill, who was shooting her first documentary when she was just 16, inspired by the John Pilger documentary, Death of a Nation, that she saw when she was 14. McNeill now works with a lightweight video camera, researching, filming and directing the stories by herself.

Basketball (Sky Sport 1, Sky 030, 7.30pm). Having lost their last two games, the Breakers face the Townsville Crocs tonight at Vector Arena. The Breakers haven’t lost three in a row for two years, and will be looking for a better result against the Crocs than last season, when they were beaten twice by the Aussies.

Media 7 (TVNZ 7, 9.05pm). Tonight, the election coverage so far with political scientist Edwin De Ronde, Listener columnist and blogger Toby Manhire, and Maori Television’s Julian Wilcox. Also tonight, a chat with Bryan Bruce, who presented the Inside New Zealand: Inside Child Poverty special on Wednesday.

Diplomatic Immunity (TV1, 11.35pm). A repeat of the James Griffin-scripted comedy about a little Pacific Island consulate in New Zealand. “Think PR farce Spin Doctors meets a browner version of Gilligan’s Island set in an Auckland villa. Bulofa!“ said Diana Wichtel in this interview with star David Fane in 2009.

FILM

The Tourist (Sky Movies, Sky 020, 8.30pm). Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in the same movie is an awful lot of pretty, despite Johnny’s crap haircut. It’s supposed to be a light, fun romcom-slash-thriller, but it’s Johnny that doesn’t get it, says Roger Ebert. It lumbers along, said Salon’s Andrew O’Hehir, but at least Angelina puts on the glamour for a change. (2010)

RADIO

Nine to Noon with Kathryn Ryan (Radio New Zealand National, 9.06am). Today: In her series of interviews with the party leaders, Ryan talks with Labour leader Phil Goff; UK correspondent Kate Adie; paleo-zoologist Trevor H Worth on New Zealand’s prehistoric past; Harry Broad reviews Digging Up the Past: Archaeology for the Young and the Curious, by David Veart; new technology with Donald Clark; parenting with Nigel Latta; and film review with Dan Slevin. Info and audio here.

The Music Mix (Radio New Zealand National, 11.06pm). Nick Atkinson looks at Bic Runga’s new album Belle; has a chat with Gin Wigmore; and Kirsten Johnstone talks with Lindon Puffin about his debut album Hope Holiday.
