“We’ve been trying to get it to Gisborne for ages so we’re stoked that it’s finally here,” says BrazilBeat Sound System DJ Mara Weiss of the Glow Paint Party.
The concept is well known on the dance party circuit and, Weiss says, is a fusion of art, dance, high-energy music and paint (non-toxic, naturally).
“People are encouraged to come along dressed in white and as the music builds, eventually the paint cannons come out,” she added.
“Black lights accentuate the day-glow colours and, com-bined with the dancers’ movements, each person becomes their own individual work of art.”
The duo had been planning for over a year to bring the Glow Paint Party to Gisborne, said Weiss who, with Beto, will launch a fresh live show that incorporates new original songs Propaganda Machine and 17th Street Mission, as well as global bass styles from US sub-genre moombahton to dubstep and the more upbeat kuduro.
The glow party movement started on US university campuses more than five years ago but it has taken a while for the concept to reach the East Coast, though events have already been held in Wellington, Auckland, Tauranga and Napier.
Tauranga promoter and DJ Pato Alvarez — who will also be on the decks, as will Aucklander Tommy Gee — said that, to date, the ones he had hosted in Tauranga had been a big success: “It’s an amazing experience,” he says. “People just love it and now it is Gisborne’s turn.”
