Sky Television has announced a new pay-TV service.
An "Igloo'' set-top box will show free to air channels with the option to buy one month's access to 30 channels.
Pay-per-view sports events, movies and TV episodes will also be available to purchase.
The TV channels are accessed through terrestrial digital TV but other content will be available through an internet connection. It is unclear when the internet service would be available.
The new service, called Igloo, will be available in the first half of 2012.
A Sky TV statement said the Igloo set-top box will cost less than $200 and the 30 channels will cost around $25.
Igloo is a partnership between Sky TV (51 per cent) and TVNZ (49 per cent).
The service will be provided on Sky's DTT spectrum.
The Igloo set-top box is an alternative to conventional Freeview set-top boxes, needed for the national switchover to digital TV starting next year.
Hawke's Bay and the West Coast will be the first regions to have their analogue TV signal turned off.
