Top Gear's Botswana Special lives again, and is it the end of Coro's Underworld undies?

The Best of Top Gear: Botswana Special
Coronation Street (TV1, 7.30pm). It’s carnage, carnage! Evil Tony has escaped from jail and he and henchman Robbie Sloane have taken three hostages in Underworld undie factory, including Tony’s ex-wife Carla. Plus, the place is burning! Two of these people are not going to make it out alive. Meanwhile, the verdict in Gail’s murder trial is handed down. What a week!
Michael Jackson and Bubbles (Prime, 7.30pm). A documentary about Wacko and the chimp. Sad really. For the chimp.
24 Hours in A&E (TV1, 8.30pm). The final of this observational series that leaves other observational series in its dust (forget about the voyeuristic Embarrassing Bodies over on TV2). Frequently moving, fascinating and a little bit sad, tonight is no exception: a 16-year-old is admitted with a suspected stroke, and a schizophrenic patient is admitted after failing to take his diabetes medication.

A repeat of the Botswana Special, in which Jeremy “Big Mouth” Clarkson, Richard “Hamster” Hammond and James “James” May drive across Botswana in used two-wheel drive cars costing no more than £1500. If any of their cars breaks down, they have to used a Volkswagen Beetle, their least favourite car of all time. Challenges include crossing the Makgadikgadi salt pan and the Okavango Delta. For the latter, they are advised to make their cars wild animal-proof. Full details at this obsessive Wikipedia entry.
Chuck (TV2, 10.30pm). New character Vivian McArthur (Lauren Cohan – Rose from The Vampire Diaries) works with Chuck and Sarah to access a bank vault containing information left to her by her father, Alexi Volkoff. It seems she’s on their side, but for how long? Also, we hope we see more of the fantastic Ray Wise, who was the best Satan ever in Reaper, and who plays Volkoff’s lawyer here.
FILM
The Town (Sky Movies, Sky 020, 8.30pm). Ben Affleck seems to have been a little bit desperate to be taken seriously after a bunch of flops and braindead blockbusters, which isn’t to say that he is without substance. Far from it. His first feature as a director, Gone Baby Gone, was a gritty, low-budget noir, and with a bigger budget, The Town is another excellent high-stakes crime thriller which seems to have been hatched in the 70s. Returning to his old neighbourhood of Boston, Affleck plays one of a group of bank robbers who get themselves into trouble by doing one last heist. Affleck’s character, Doug, is against it, as he has fallen for a woman whom the gang took hostage during their last robbery and then let go. Unfortunately, loose cannon Jeremy Renner wants her dealt with, fearing she saw too much. Renner was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his performance and the whole cast, including Jon Hamm, Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall, is a class act. Nice accents too. (2010) 8
RADIO
The Music Mix (Radio New Zealand National, 11.06pm). Nick Atkinson meets talent buyer Malcolm Haynes, who is the reason that New Zealand acts the Naked and Famous, Shapeshifter, Ladi6, Electric Wire Hustle, King Kapisi and Bella Kalolo played at Glastonbury this year. Plus, he finds musician Alistair Galbraith in the process of turning an entire building on the Auckland waterfront into a musical instrument. Further info here.
