TV & Radio Thursday December 22

A nightmare of excessive tulle consumption on My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas, and The X Factor heads towards its finale. Shame.

TV

My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas

Coronation Street (TV1, 7.30pm). What Recession Britain looks like: it’s the end of Underworld undies, putting all the ladies out on the street and on the dole.

The X Factor (TV3, 7.30pm). The final episodes tonight and tomorrow. What a shame.

My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas (TV1, 8.30pm). A seasonal nightmare of excessive tulle consumption when the travellers return to Ireland for their traditional series of communions and weddings.

Comedy Jam (TV2, 10.25pm). A special filmed earlier this year of the best of the musical acts in the International Comedy Festival. Jimeoin is the host, and does a few musical numbers himself, with performances from Irish rock-com outfit Dead Cat Bounce; Australian rocker Dave Eastgate; the wonderfully laconic Wilson Dixon; and Jeremy Elwood, who pulls entire songs out of the air with only a few prompts from the audience.

FILM

Toy Story (TV2, 5.25pm). Who still remembers the shock of the new animation, the thrill of toys coming to life? The Pixar classic was a game-changer, not just for the CGI animation, which had never been used for an entire film before, but for the “story” of the title. The film was like a challenge to all future children’s films to create proper stories everyone can relate to. (1995) 10

The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (TV2, 7.30pm). Four kids, fake snow, a wardrobe and lots of Kiwi locations – you know the story. But did you know the producers tried to bring 12 sleigh-pulling reindeer into New Zealand? MAF said no, but allowed in 10 wolves! And computer-generated Aslan has 5.2 million hairs. A star-studded, action-packed movie that delivers its treasured tale faithfully and that employed a lot of Kiwis, including director Andrew Adamson. Tim Finn’s song Winter Light is on the soundtrack. (2005) 7 – Diana Balham

RADIO

Nine to Noon with Kathryn Ryan (Radio New Zealand National, 9.06am). Today: The ministerial report on child abuse; radiation in New Zealand sea birds from the Fukishima nuclear plant; UK correspondent Kate Adie; Richard McManus interview; Harry Ricketts reviews Charles Dickens” A Life, by Claire Tomalin; new technology with Donald Clark; the preservation of remote Antarctic huts; film review with Dan Slevin.
